Raise Your Hand to Stop Child Abuse with UNICEF

There are a few topics which I want to blog about in the next few weeks but none of them is more important than this one. As I'm writing this, there are already 7 children being abused in the past 24 hours, in Malaysia alone. This number could very well be only a "tip of the iceberg" as there are a lot more unreported cases. Many children who are abuse physically, mentally, emotionally, psychologically and even SEXUALLY choose to suffer in silence. Tears shed remain unseen. Desperate cry go unheard.

Raise Your Hand to Help Kids Like Her
Why do all these cases happen when children are supposedly protected? Parents have the greatest responsibility in this. 1 in 2 child abuse victims reported are abused by parents. Parents addicted to drugs and alcohol, parents ignorant of parenting issues, parents with difficulties in relationship. These parents could have been otherwise loving parents but stress and addiction break them.

So what can we (adults, young adults and teenagers alike) help them? By learning more about child abuse. By educating friends and family around us. By reporting child abuse cases at Child Line 15999. By supporting child abuse campaign around us. I would like to share with you here about the signs of child abuse. These include:
  • Unexplained burns, bites, bruises, broken bones, or black eyes
  • Injuries to or around the genitals
  • Bruises or other marks in various stages of healing indicative of repeated beatings or physical assaults
  • Refusing to go to a friend’s or relative’s home for no apparent reason, for example, “I just don’t like him anymore.”
  • Acting out adult sexual behavior or sexually explicit language a young child is unlikely to know
If these symptoms are coupled with other behavioral and emotional signs and they happen repeatedly, we might want to suspect a child abuse case. Do investigate before making any judgment. If it involves people you personally know, advise them and support them. Home visitation and parent support group surely help.

The first thing you can do after reading this is to support the Raise Your Hand Campaign from UNICEF. They need 100 000 campaigners to support them. All you have to do is just choosing a hand template and writing your message on child abuse. This is the very platform for Malaysians to unite against child abuse by learning more and doing more. If you are Facebook or Twitter users, put this as your personal update and get people to support the campaign. If you are a blogger, writer or educator, use your influence and educate your readers.

Remember. Every decision you make about children will affect their future. A message from you could possibly save a kid from being abused. You can help them. Support them now by clicking on the link below.

For those keen learners out there, you can read more on child abuse by downloading these materials directly from UNICEF. These documents are very reader friendly. The link is here
