My dream is to be one of the top researchers in recycling technology and to establish a green enterprise. This dream has an unusual origin: reforming gangster friends. At first glance, reforming gangsters might have no connection with recycling waste but these two processes do share a common thread as both of them involve recognizing and unleashing hidden potential. Through helping my friends, I have adopted one of my core principles: not to waste anything and to always maximize potential. This principle then forms the backbone of my whole career plan.
My school ranks the second worst in its district. It is rife with gangsterism and vandalism. In my five years here, I have developed friendships with the so-called gangsters and miscreants. I even got the chance to know one of the leaders of the most influential gang in my school. After years of interaction, I have realized that they are not bad in nature and actually possess unique abilities and skills. If not for their family backgrounds and other circumstances, they would not have chosen this road.
As a student leader and their close friend, I strove to mediate the relationship between the disciplinary teachers and my gangster friends. On one hand, I explained the situations my friends faced to the teacher and encouraged them to take softer approaches; on the other hand, I helped my friends to explore their dreams and develop their hidden talents. I did all these because I could not bear to see their youth and talents wasted. They are not rubbish as claimed by others, they are just misplaced resources. Many of them have left the underworld and are now pursuing diplomas or working.
This success taught me that if the value of an otherwise useless thing could be recognized and further utilized, it would become an invaluable asset. This concept then became my most important life principle. After that first success, my quirky mind started to relate this experience to recycling waste. Through years of reading and observation, I realized that just as my gangster friends’ talents were overlooked, many people are ignorant about the unusual values of their ‘rubbish.’ They throw away recyclable materials without second thoughts, bringing the amount of rubbish produced in the country to increasingly dangerous levels.
I began to think about what role I could play to solve this. My experience of working with my gangster friends then gave me the solution: transforming rubbish into usable matters. I started to harbor a dream: using technology to make unrecyclable matters decomposable and reusable. I want to establish a company specializing in waste management. It will collect, convert and redistribute the waste materials from households, agriculture and manufacturing. I want to encourage everyone not to waste things by allowing them to sell rubbish for money. They would surely be surprised by the wealth rubbish can bring them just as how my teachers and I were surprised by the unleashed potential of my gangster friends.
I aspire to help continue ensuring that everything on this earth will be fully utilized and that nothing will ever be wasted.
Yours truly,
